Aquatica

Aquatica at Sea World

It seems that all of the Orlando theme parks are stepping it up by adding new attractions, rides and expanding the size of their parks! Over at Universal Studios’ Islands of Adventure they’re getting ready to launch the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in the spring of 2010. The Walt Disney World Resort has confirmed a massive expansion of Fantasyland over at the Magic Kingdom, and now the beautiful Aquatica park has announced they will join in on the expansion trend by adding new rides to Aquatica in 2010.

Aquatica is a gorgeous water park that is considered part of the SeaWorld theme park family. It spans over 60 acres and features 36 water slides, 3 drop raft slides, cannon bowls, a six story family raft slide and more. While Orlando may be in Central Florida, Aquatica has 80,000 square feet of beautiful sandy beaches that even feature private cabanas and waterside waiter service for those of you wanting to be catered to. This great park, which caters to water park enthusiasts of all ages, is open all year round thanks to our great Florida weather. Not only will you see great water slides and a beautiful “beach,” you will also see an amazing array of interesting animals like exotic fish, Commerson’s Dolphins, spoonbills, and cookabura birds. When you’re hungry you can eat at the Banana Beach Cookout, where it’s always time for a poolside BBQ, or grab a quick bite at the Mango Market.
As for that expansion trend, Aquatica will be adding four new waterslides for those of you that can’t get enough of the thrilling rides, and we have the details on two of them! The Twin Tornado walls will feature V-shaped slides that shoot riders in 6 person inflatable rafts up a vertical wall thanks to innovative hydro-magnetic technology. The Topsy Turvy is a 40 foot pipeline style ride that fits a 2 person inner tube. You can either ride the 285’ long track that features 2 funnels or zoom down the 460’ long track that features 4 funnels. 2010 looks like it’s going to be fantastic for the Aquatica park.

Tyra Banks at Disney World

Tyra Banks and Princess Tiana at Disney World

Supermodel and talk show host Tyra Banks surprised the girls and their moms with a Walt Disney World vacation . So for Tyra, like many other African-American celebrities, the arrival of Disney’s newest princess is a milestone both in Disney history and in their own life. Anika Noni Rose, the beautiful voice of Princess Tiana, was brought to tears at the sight of the first Princess Tiana doll, proclaiming that now little girls all over the world had an African-American princess to represent them. It was an emotional moment and a great moment for the newest Disney star, and we’re sure we’re going to here plenty of great stories about Princess Tiana’s impact once The Princess and the Frog is released on December 11th, 2009!

In honor of the new movie, Tyra filmed her trip to the Orlando theme parks area where she took three little girls to the Walt Disney World Resort. On this special trip, the three girls, mom, and Tyra all got to attend a very special tea party in their honor at the Magic Kingdom, where they met none other than Princess Tiana. The special visit will be the highlight of an upcoming episode of The Tyra Show during sweeps week. We’re glad Tyra decided to spotlight our very own Walt Disney World Resort when she chose to bring these three lucky families to visit Tiana and the Magic Kingdom, since there are so many great things going on right now!
Tomorrowland’s Transit Authority and Space Mountain finally opened with brand new additions and technology. In order to promote The Princess and the Frog you can catch Tiana’s Showboat Jubilee over in Frontierland and for a special time only, Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party is bringing holiday joy to Disney guests from around the world. Get your discount Disney tickets for the party and make sure you stop by to see the Magic Kingdom converted into a holiday wonderland.
We’re sure Tyra and the girls had a great time with Princess Tiana, and we’re sure The Princess and the Frog will do great in theaters. Make sure you go see it and take your friends!

Happy Birthday Mickey

Mick Mouse

Happy Birthday Mickey

Break out the bubbly and get the cake batter ready. Everyone’s favorite Disney Character, loved all over the world by kids and adults, is celebrating his 81st birthday this week!  While Mickey began as a silent black and white cartoon in “Plane Crazy,” where he tries to fly a plane and sneak a kiss with Minnie Mouse at the same time, his official debut is considered to be in the musical cartoon “Steamboat Willie.” Disney aficionados will recognize the familiar image of Mickey steering a giant steamboat as he whistles along, and some may say it was with that cartoon that the empire of Walt Disney began. Who knew, way back then, that a little cartoon about a mouse would spawn the incredible Disney theme parks in Orlando and all over the world?

There’s a famous quote by Walt Disney that goes: “I only hope that we never lose sight of one thing — that it was all started by a mouse.” It couldn’t be a more honest and even fascinating statement. That little mouse trying to sneak a kiss and steer a steamboat gave birth to a company that would create Disneyland in Anaheim, California and the Walt Disney World Resort right here in Orlando. There are now Disney Parks all over the world including Tokyo, Paris and soon Shanghai. How can we forget the classic movies? From Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin, The Little Mermaid and The Lion King to the brand new The Princess and the Frog, which features Disney’s first Black princess, Tiana!
There are also great television projects like The Mickey Mouse Club, which was where stars like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Justin Timberlake got their start. The Disney Channel expanded to produce a new level of teen stars with performers like Miley Cyrus, The Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez. Along with the great shows and theme parks, there are also special events where Mickey and Minnie are the star of the show; whether it be in a parade or through Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. Incredible how Disney has grown after 81 years, and it’s only going to get bigger. Still, shirtless and all, Mickey keeps his full-time job as Master of Ceremonies at the Walt Disney theme parks around the world. We’re guessing he’ll have his little gloved paws full today as folks (including his toony pals Donald Duck, Goofy and main squeeze Minnie Mouse) head over to wish him a happy birthday. Happy Birthday to the mouse that started it all!

Disney is offering a free day’s admission

November 20, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Disney Characters

Disney World in Orlando

Disney is offering a free day’s admission to 1 million guests who complete a day of volunteer work next year.

The “Give a Day, Get a Disney Day” program will provide certified volunteers with a one-day ticket to any park at Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., or Walt Disney World near Orlando, Fla., in 2010.

Disney is partnering with HandsOn Network, a clearinghouse for volunteer opportunities, to connect people with projects and to certify that the work was done.

“We are trying to inspire 1 million people to volunteer in their communities and we’re inspiring them to do that by giving them a free day at a Disney park,” Jay Rasulo, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, said in a phone interview with The Associated Press.

Rasulo called the promotion “very timely,” citing the increased needs of nonprofits in the weak economy, as well as President Obama’s national volunteering initiative.

“The spirit of our country is very much behind that, whether it’s the first family or whether it’s the average family,” Rasulo said.

Duncan Dickson, who teaches theme park management at the University of Central Florida’s Rosen School of Hospitality Management in Orlando, said the volunteer initiative is “a smart marketing move.”

Dickson said Disney will get good buzz for encouraging volunteerism plus free publicity from the nonprofits that benefit. And even when theme parks let people in for free, they make their money back in other ways, Dickson said.

“You make a lot of money in popcorn and T-shirts and other things,” Dickson said.

Some guests who come in for free would have bought tickets anyway, but the free offer will also bring in visitors who wouldn’t otherwise have made the trip, and they’ll bring paying guests with them, Dickson added. “Anything that pushes the turnstiles is good for business,” Dickson said.

HandsOn Network has 70,000 affiliated agencies, from Habitat for Humanity to local food banks, churches, health care centers, and educational programs. Once their service is verified by HandsOn, volunteers print out an online certificate that can be redeemed at a Disney park.

Examples of volunteer opportunities currently listed on HandsOn’s Web site range from drivers and bingo callers to a book drive organizer at a senior center in Scranton, Pa., to a docent at the Oregon Maritime Museum in Portland.

The free admission offer is part of a larger trend in the tourism industry, using everything from free hotel nights to two-for-one discounts to attract visitors in the weak economy. Disneyland this year offered two free nights with the purchase of three nights at a Disney resort, and all the U.S. Disney parks have allowed guests in free on their birthdays this year.

Rasulo said that 3.5 million people registered for the birthday promotion and about 30 percent of them have taken advantage of it so far.

Disney kicked the volunteer promotion off Tuesday by sending 1,000 volunteers, including employees from Disney and Southwest Airlines, to work on projects around the country, from a Habitat for Humanity site in Los Angeles to the Bethune School of Excellence in Chicago.

Would-be volunteers must register online with Disney and must be residents of the U.S., Canada or Puerto Rico to be eligible for the free admission. The work must be performed in 2010, and the park visit must take place by Dec. 15, 2010. Participants must be 18 or older to sign up for the program, but volunteer work done by children ages 6-17 qualifies for a free ticket as long as kids are accompanied by an adult when volunteering. Unused admission certificates can be donated to a charity designated by Disney.

Volunteers who have multiday tickets or annual passes can get a special FASTPASS for up to six people in lieu of the voucher.

Harry Potter to open in 2010 at Universal Studios

November 19, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Harry Potter World

Harry Potter World Universal Studios

Orlando Florida’s theme-parks are promoting new attractions this year, but none more than the parks opening in 2010.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter,” the $250 million-plus “theme park within a theme park” that is scheduled to open by next summer in the Islands of Adventure,  has sparked a near-constant stream of speculation about just how the resort will bring the Harry Potter universe to life.

“The industry scuttlebutt is that it will be fabulous,” said Bob Rogers, founder of BRC Imagination Arts, a Burbank, Calif.-based attractions-design company. “I see the gleam in the eyes of the people who are working on it. They think they’ve got a real winner here.”

Universal Studios has kept the project – based on the wildly lucrative, seven-book series by British author J.K. Rowling and the movies it inspired – largely shrouded in secrecy. Contractors working on the project have been required to sign confidentiality agreements, and the resort has offered few clues beyond a handful of artist renderings. Universal Studios has also fueled the hype with a series of Harry Potter-themed Internet polls asking fans questions such as what dragon they would like to ride (a Chinese Fireball beat out a Hungarian Horntail) and what they would like to drink (butterbeer bested pumpkin juice).

Shops, Eatery & More:

But interviews with people in and around the project, and a review of public records, offer some details about what to expect.

Plans for the 20-acre Wizarding World of Harry Potter show more than a dozen buildings, including at least three shops, a restaurant and multiple forced-perspective decorative buildings. The centerpiece will be the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the iconic castle and keep from the Harry Potter books and movies.

Universal’s Hogwarts, records show, will be 150 feet, or 15 stories, high.

The castle will also house what is expected to be the Wizarding World’s signature attraction. Several people familiar with the project, including one person directly involved, said the ride will be what’s known as a “robocoaster” – a ride system in which guests sit in seats suspended from a robotic arm that can swivel and swoop in multiple directions while it advances along a track.

Plans show the track snaking through more than a dozen scenes, though what those scenes will be remains a mystery. The attraction, according to the people familiar with it, will also feature an elaborate pre-show queue with special effects such as floating candles and snow falling indoors.

Before they arrive at Hogwarts, guests entering the Wizarding World will pass through Hogsmeade Village, an old-Europe-style town from the Harry Potter novels. Universal’s plans for Hogsmeade include The Three Broomsticks restaurant, shops and stylized locker and stroller-parking areas. The few clues Universal Studios has provided indicate the stores will include Dervish & Banges, which sells and repairs magical equipment, and Honeydukes, a sweet shop whose treats include chocolate-covered frogs.

In between Hogsmeade and Hogwarts, Universal Studios is building Hagrid’s Hut, home of the friendly half-giant. It has also said it plans to re-create the Forbidden Forest, an ominous setting from the books that’s home to creatures such as centaurs, unicorns and spiderlike “acromantulas.”

Re-themed coasters?

There is little yet to indicate what rides will be included in the Harry Potter Wizarding World beyond the Hogwarts “dark” ride. Part of the Wizarding World is being built in the Lost Continent section of Islands of Adventure, and documents indicate that two existing attractions there – Dueling Dragons, where riders choose between two intertwined roller coasters, and the Flying Unicorn, a children’s coaster closed last year as part of the Potter construction – will be incorporated into Harry Potter’s world.

Both rides are expected to be re-themed with Harry Potter story lines. Records show, for instance, that Universal Studios plans to add a large tent at the entrance of Dueling Dragons, which fans have speculated will ultimately be converted into a re-creation of a wizarding tournament from one of the books in which one of the events involves stealing eggs from dragons.

Of course, the rides are almost secondary for fans when it comes to the Wizarding World, said Robert Niles, publisher of the Web site www.themeparkinsider.com.

“People are expecting to immerse themselves in the whole Harry Potter universe,” Niles said. “Really, a lot more than other attractions, people are going to be paying a lot of attention to the theming, the attention to detail and the atmosphere of the place, more so than the rides.”

Universal Studios would not elaborate on any of its plans last week.

“We will be excited to talk about the Wizarding World of Harry Potter – when we are ready to do so,” spokesman Tom Schroder said.

The off-the-charts anticipation surrounding the Wizarding World of Harry Potter comes with some risk for Universal, said Rogers, of BRC Imagination Arts. “If you’re dealing with one of the great intellectual properties like, for example, Star Trek or Harry Potter, you have to work very hard to make sure that you don’t disappoint the fan base,” he said.

Whatever is ultimately included when the Wizarding World of Harry Potter opens next year, newer additions will soon follow. Universal’s licensing contract with Warner Bros. requires the resort to add elements from the final movies in the series – the last of which isn’t scheduled to arrive in theaters until 2011.

The contract even states that the later movies must be represented “in generally similar per-movie proportion” as the first five films.

The park is in its 50th year of operation, bringing a large variety of entertainment options to its guests. Whether you love to ride roller coasters or check out beautiful animals and greenery, there is something for you at Busch Gardens. Unlike the Orlando theme parks, Busch Gardens is located just a short car trip away in Tampa Bay. It’s the #1 destination spot for the bay area and receives a record number of visitors every year, mostly thanks to its amazing roller coasters like Montu, SheiKra, Scorpion and Kumba. For thrill-ride enthusiasts this is definitely the place to be and, usually, Busch Gardens is considered a more adult-friendly theme park. That doesn’t mean it’s not a good place for the kiddies, it’s a great place for everyone—especially during the holidays!

Over at the Stanleyville Theatre, guests will be treated to the show Christmas on Ice. It’s only a limited engagement show, so you’ll have to make sure you get your discount theme park tickets and plan your trip accordingly. Professional ice skaters will delight you with routines choreographed to your favorite holiday songs. Over at the Marrakesh Theater, Christmas from the Heart will feature an amazing gospel choir that will lift your spirits as they perform an incredible medley of holiday and spiritual favorites.

If you like to have a big breakfast experience, reserve a spot at the Santa breakfast at the Desert Grill. At this special breakfast, Santa and his Elves will join diners for a commemorative photo op and then a private performance featuring seasonal songs and tap dancing. Along with all of these great shows, you will also find merry carolers singing throughout the park, beautiful decorations and endless, bright poinsettias. This is just the beginning for the holidays at Busch Gardens, since New Year’s Eve is right around the corner! Special fireworks for the New Year’s celebrations begin December 26th through the 30th and they culminate with a big bash on the 31st.

If you’ve never been to the Busch Gardens Tampa Bay theme park for the holidays, this is a great year to start! You will enjoy the beautiful holiday shows as well as the classic Busch Gardens traditions!

Update to Space Mountain

Space Mountain in Magic Kingdom

The new Space Mountain at Magic Kingdom

Disney is busy updating the Space mountain ride at Magic Kingdom. We want to share more about the Space Mountain attraction at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom Park as renovation work wraps up. As you know, the classic Space Mountain experience still exists — it’s just being updated with new technology and 21st century gadgetry. Inside the attraction, there’s new lighting as well as special “darkening” effects. And you’ll see updated color schemes for rocket capsules, line and load areas. Imagineers worked with Walt Disney World Facilities Asset Management for even more enhancements, including new paint, carpet, seat fabric and other décor elements.

But what caught our attention during a recent walkthrough were details about track upgrades. It’s the same track layout and overall look and feel but workers integrated new technology into the track while not changing the classic Space Mountain ride experience. “As technology evolves, it helps us enhance those elements without losing any essence of the attraction,” Walt Disney Imagineering Senior Show Designer Alex Wright says.

You should also know that a ride photo system will capture guests during their space flights on Space Mountain. It will not be utilizing Disney Photopass, a ride photo system allowing you to access, share and purchase photos during and after a visit.

We think you’ll be “pleasantly surprised” with the enhancements. The attraction is scheduled to reopen on November 22
